"province" は、「州」「地方」「省」という意味を持つ名詞です。
主に国の中で特定の地域を指し、その地域が持つ独自の文化や歴史、政治的な特徴を示す際に使われます。
例えば、カナダやアメリカにはそれぞれの州（province）があり、各州は独自の法律や政府を持っています。
また、日本では「地方」や「省」といった文脈でも使われることがあります。

province と region の違い

province と territory の違い
territoryは、一般的に「領土」を意味し、特定の国家に属する地域を指しますが、必ずしも行政区分ではありません。例えば、国によっては未開発の地域や特別な管理下にある地域も含まれます。対してprovinceは、正式な行政機関が存在し、その中で法律や政策が適用される地域です。
province と district の違い

語源
英単語「province」の語源は、ラテン語の「provincia」に由来します。この言葉は「pro-」（前に）と「vincere」（征服する）から成り立っています。つまり、元々の意味は「前に出て征服する」や「支配地域」といったニュアンスを持っていました。
